29.

Joss was riding in the pitch black island darkness, thinking about Laura, about how there was such a thing as too much chemistry. That was their problem, she felt, and they had solved it over time by never being in the same room together too often. Other people felt it and excused themselves. Joss’s partners always despised Laura, and she was powerless to dissuade them: they had been friends forever and always would be. And over time the snap between them had become a pleasant, anticipated hum. Every so often, say once a year, they would have a four-hour dinner and avoid prolonged eye contact or certain topics. But the truth of the matter was imbalance: Joss was in love and Laura wasn’t. At one such dinner a waitress had brought them a tiramisu to share and asked how long they had been together.

“Forever,” Joss had half-joked at the precise moment that Laura scoff-laughed and said, “Oh, no! We’re just really good friends.”

And even that wasn’t really true anymore.
